NAME: Nei Takarai
AGE: 16
CANON: Gokurakugai
CANON POINT: Post Chapter 13
CRAU: N/A
OTHER: Nothing that currently comes to mind!
SUITABILITY: She's got one of those personalities that make her a good source of some comedy, and there's a lot of potential for different types of CR with her. For someone who wants to be complimented and praised as desperately as she does, she's as brash as they come and annoyingly self-assured to boot. But at the end of the day and under all that ego and flair, she does mean well and
is trying to do her best with what she has in the situation she was put in. That awkwardness in her handling (if you can call it that) of social relationships is just part of the charm!
There's also some dishonesty going on as far as her admitting to fun things she'd like to do when the chance is presented because she wants to seem like she's above that, but it's not hard to bait her into coming along anyway if the right cards are played (mess with her sense of over-competitiveness).
All in all, displacing someone like her into a place whose standard is skewed in a different way than her hometown would be fun to explore. Being forcefully benched from official missions would also mean she'd have to stop and figure out what to do with herself with the now surplus of time she has in her hands. She can't rely on her usual method of finishing her assassination missions for praise either, so guess she'll simply have to find something else. She also can't use her string of missions as an excuse not to get closer to people anymore either!
It'd be a great exploration of: 'what do you have left when you remove all your comfortable distractions?'
HISTORY: There's nothing about her situation at birth that would've indicated that she'd wind up where she is now. The flashbacks shown in the more recent chapters cover her history at age 6.
Her family was affluent, and they live very disparate lives compared to the normal everyday person in Gokurakugai. Compared to other character's flashbacks, hers is very tonally different in that there's not even a hint of the typical life in the district until her encounter with her kidnapping and ransom later.
Nei was raised sheltered as a sweet, thoughtful little lady in a mansion surrounded by people that waited on them hand and foot. This little one lived in the mansion adored by the staff, and a lot of flashbacks show her playing and cheerily helping them with the various tasks in the way children do in the small ways they can.
Her relationship with her parents is about what one would expect with a family like hers. She adores them both enough to very thoughtfully plan out how she's going to make bunny plushies based off of them (down to the color scheme) even if her father is more distant than her mother. There are a lot of contextual hints through the story that she doesn't interact with him often, but she loves him plenty regardless. Her mother is the one she's more often seen with, and it's always in moments of joy and tenderness.
SPOILERS FOR CHAPTERS 24 TO 26: the full context for what went wrong and why she's driven to what she's doing now, which is just extra reading if wanted.(warnings for: kidnapping, mentions of violence against children and potential trafficking)
A man comes by one day while she was trying to deliver a tray of snacks to her father's study and overheard an argument about someone being abandoned. She doesn't hear much before she's ushered away, but the argument hinted that he might be her older half-brother, which doesn't seem to be something she could put together in her younger age.
She chats with him briefly on his way out and offers to fix his torn jacket for him. He relents despite his grumbling that she's putting something strange on it (a cutesy heart-shaped patch), he leaves without much more fanfare after this even after her declaration that he forgot to say thank you.
Some time later, she's taken by two men as she exits school, and it's revealed that they are acquaintances with her brother and that they intend to ransom her to her father. The two also discusses how they're going behind her brother's back and that one of them made a deal elsewhere to sell her with no plans to return her even after the money is received.
Terrified, disoriented and confused, she's then struck and told to smile so that they can show her off to the buyer with photos, which she shakily concedes to.
Thankfully, her brother returns just as they begin to prepare to show more of her, and he puts them both down and kicks them out and snarls telling them that he can't trust them with this, and tells them to get out. After this heated moment, he also throws her a bag of food and cuts the ropes off her wrists and tells her to get some rest, which she ignores in favor for clinging to him and finally letting herself cry.
Things calm down, money is exchanged and he drops her off on the street calmly telling her to wait and someone will come get her. Despite the situation, she turns to him to thank him despite being involved in her kidnapping to begin with, and that was that.
The next time she sees her brother, it's her walking into her father's study and spotting him standing in the midst of bodies that have been crushed with limbs twisted from the sheer force of the impact. It is shown here that he has been made into a Maga (Disaster Beast) at some point, and gained supernatural abilities based off of how he died.
He tells her that she should hold onto how she feels now and that he will praise her if she can kill him, then spares her. From there, we know from a panel of news that she's the only one that's recovered from the murder scene at the mansion at age 6.
It's not currently known exactly how she joins group that she's with now (The Saragi Anti-Maga Organization) or how long she's been with them, but she's considered to be Tao's senior despite the discrepancy in their ages (who has been with the Saragi for 9 years at maximum) so it's likely she was picked up directly after she was orphaned. Since she states that she's investigating that murder case, she probably thought that they're her best bet for getting answers since cops have been repeatedly been stated to be useless in the district.
From then on she's trained with a sword and started working for the Saragi, and has since been tirelessly working to be lauded and praised, which she cites to be her main motivation to do well at anything.
ABILITIES: Fighting wise, she's quite the adept
swordsman despite the availability of and access to firearms. She's fast, efficient and displays proficient control in that she's able to limit damage to structures no matter the number or size her opponents come in. She has a record of never having been injured on a job despite her long tenure with the Saragi, and the fact that she usually goes alone on all her jobs.
Along with her general prowess in battle, she's also shown to have a great amount of endurance in that she can take on missions back to back without a break.
An example from the manga!
In her fight with Alma, another example of her fine control is shown in how she pushed him to the point of breaking without killing him even if she does go after points close to vitals. She was also shown to have the strength to block his hits singlehandedly, and throw him hard enough to crack the pillar he was launched against. This fight ends with her without a scratch, and when he finally recovers from the bloodloss, he's told that she's already on another mission elsewhere.Another thing she uses in her work is her
blood, which is less an ability and more of a characteristic that's still worth noting. The Maga are drawn to it, which she explains is because it tastes better, and they've been shown to drop what they're doing even if they're in the middle of fighting someone else some distance away in order to come after her. She keeps a few bottles on her to use as lures to draw her targets out from hiding.
VICES: ⟡ Self-Destructive | A recklessness specific to her pushing herself to the point that she doesn't take breaks. She works tirelessly without end probably to keep from lingering idle too long and having to make any kind of introspection or reflection to take a good look around. It does not seem that she cares very much about what ultimately happens to her either, and despite adoring the attention and praise she gets from others, there’s still a divide she puts between her and them where it almost feels transactional and superficial on her end (even though this isn’t how they feel at all). She provides a service and does it well and gets praised for it, that’s it!
⟡ Sensitive | She has this paradoxical and desperate need for external validation over the fact that she’s independent and can take care of herself. A facet she pushes to an extreme when she doesn’t need to, going for unreasonable heights in achievement when she could make do and get by with far less. The amount of effort she needlessly puts into it makes her prone to lashing out at the smallest slight or doubt because she sees it as an attack on the character she thinks she’s perfected.
This is likely worsened by a strange sense of responsibility where she feels that she needs to be able to do everything by herself now that her family is gone and she thinks that no one is responsible for her, and neither should they be because they have nothing to do with her.
⟡ Self-Centered | For all her diligence and hard work that usually goes towards things that will help other people, there’s an undercurrent of it being somewhat self-serving where it feeds into the cycle of ‘there’s use for me here’ or ‘if I do this I’ll get praised for it’, especially when she insists on doing it all on her own while actively taking work from the others in her organization.
A lot of her logic also does not take into the account that fact that she already has a support system and has for quite some time. One she takes for granted with a lack of acknowledgement that they’ve always cared for her because she does not stop to look around. Her worldview tends to be narrow as well, and she doesn’t consider much beyond what she already knows until her hand is forced. VIRTUES: ✦ Dedicated | Nei wasn’t born into a background where it would have been natural and inevitable for her to learn how to fight. She was sheltered, soft, and something of a crybaby with all the bearings of a lady who does not know violence – even her blood makes her the perfect and preferred prey. The overwhelming skill she exhibits today is born out of a dedication she’s put towards making herself into something she isn’t. While it does get pushed to the point of recklessness, it is nonetheless one of her greatest strengths to be able to push through her weakness to do what she needs to and then some.
✦ Responsible | Her sense of responsibility is deep-rooted and likely one of the artifacts she has left from who she was in her past. Even if it is upheld and maintained by the wrong sets of motivations these days, Nei isn’t the type to abandon her work. There’s also a wide range of things she could have put her energy towards, most of which would be easier avenues if all she wants is to be praised and be seen as independent, but she still chose to go into a profession where she will wind up saving a lot of people from threats they don’t know about, potentially saving others from experiencing what she had with loss.
✦ Well-Meaning | In the sense that she will do the best she can not to cause trouble or do wrong by people when it really comes down to it. For example, despite her brash and prideful self, Nei remains extremely polite and respectful to one specific group of people: service workers. No matter how she snarls, she wants better for people and does not really wish ill of them if they don’t deserve it. It just so happens that she doesn’t always have the emotional intelligence, awareness or the social grace to know how to do it in a way that isn’t lined with aggression. SUIT REQUESTS: ♡ HEART | A lot of Nei's current issues stem from a mentality that hasn't even considered the possibility that she's allowed to form proper connections with other people. Survivor's guilt has made her unable to think of the people around her as a candidate she can form meaningful relationships with because of the loss of the most important ones she had in childhood. Because of this, she keeps herself incredibly busy and the only thing she actively seeks from the people around her is validation of how good she does, but not much else.
Plus! She's already volatile enough as it is, so giving her Spades would exacerbate what's already there and further vindicate her in thinking that how she's been operating is how it should be. Which would mean she'd kill the possibility of anything meaningful before it can even begin, even if inadvertently, so putting her in a position where she craves the need to actually satisfy her emotional needs would be better for her.
♢ DIAMOND | Even though the choice for the suit that governs emotion is because it’s the opposite of who she is as a person, the suit that governs the body flips on that logic a little where the choice here follows more along the kind of person she’s made herself to be to survive.
Nei has carried herself through everything that might have been outside her comfort zone with aggression, competition, and spite, which are all born of pride in her own independence. This is what drives her to push herself to be more than she was and to do better, all so that she can give off the impression that she doesn’t need to be taken care of.
Paradoxically, even though this is how she wants to prove that she’s fine on her own, it’s also the only thing she has to keep herself going. So, to take any of that away would be to take her drive to do something she might not normally do because she uses that heightened emotion to replace fear, nervousness or uncertainty.
It’s not the best coping mechanism, but it’s likely the only option she felt she had when she was much younger and far more terrified, and now it’s ingrained into how she passes off as high functioning!
RANK REQUESTS: Whatever rank would work best for the mod team! To even out ranks or to fill in a spot that might be needed is perfectly fine by me, but if I had to pick a number I'm picking 2 for the bit. More potential for shenanigans. Also she's terrified of haunted spaces, so, you know. Gotta do it to 'em.
SAMPLES: SAMPLE ONE | Meme Thread - Sample from a smut picture meme featuring Nei and Natsuki! Opposites in a lot of ways, similar in more. Swordsman and her weaponsmith and their dishonesty when it comes to the things they want. This is their first time after they've danced around the topic of being fond of one another without ever really saying so for ages. (And still continue to not verbalize it properly because they're just not that emotionally intelligent, but there's understanding that maybe it doesn't need to be said even if she'd much prefer if he did.)
SAMPLE TWO | GP TDM Toplevel - Truly a feature this time around. Nei lives one of the possibilities of what she could've been as the resident's mean girl and makeup artist, then a diva in two different other flavors. The lack of focus or mention of her home world (or even how she dealt with the arrival) in most the introspection is purposeful. As stuck as she is in her past, she's always been the kind of girl who focused on the task ahead of her with single-minded purpose because if she stops moving, that's when the horror happens!
